Quail eggs are one of those little homestead treasures that are amazing…until you have to peel a pile of them. Their tiny shells and delicate membranes can make peeling feel like a tedious chore.
The good news? The Instant Pot makes cooking quail eggs incredibly simple, and with the right technique, peeling becomes much easier.
What You Need
- Quail eggs
- 1 cup water
- Steamer basket or trivet
- Instant Pot
- Bowl of ice water (for cooling)
Instant Pot Quail Eggs: The 2-Minute Method
- Add water to the Instant Pot Pour 1 cup of water into the bottom of the pot.
- Load the steamer basket Place your quail eggs into a steamer basket. Try not to overcrowd them too much, but they can be stacked since they are being steamed rather than sitting directly in water.
- Cook under pressure Secure the lid and set the Instant Pot to: High Pressure — 2 minutes
- Release the pressure When the timer finishes, allow a quick release of pressure.
- Cool the eggs Immediately transfer the eggs into an ice bath for several minutes. This stops the cooking process and helps separate the egg from the shell.
The Peeling Trick That Makes a Difference
Quail eggs are notorious for stubborn shells. A method that works well is to gently crack the shells first, then place the eggs in a jar or container with a little water.
Shake vigorously.
The water cushions the eggs while the shells crack all over, allowing the membrane to loosen and making peeling much faster.
A few things I learned while doing this:
- Don’t shake too aggressively — quail eggs are still delicate.
- The cleaner the eggs are before using a manual egg peeler, the better it works.
- If the peeler gets covered in shell debris, clean it off. A dirty roller can make peeling much less effective.
Once They’re Peeled…
Quail eggs are incredibly versatile:
- Pickled quail eggs
- Protein-packed snacks
- Salad toppings
- Deviled quail eggs
- Appetizer trays
- Meal prep snacks
One of my favorite simple preparations is seasoning them with Vegeta and pairing them with homemade spicy fermented home-grown cucumbers. Stay tuned for quail egg egg salad, quail egg deviled eggs, and quail egg drop soup (with quail bone broth) recipes soon!
A bowl of freshly peeled quail eggs may take a little patience, but once you get the technique down, processing a whole batch becomes much easier.
From backyard birds to the kitchen table — small eggs, big rewards.
